And I thought we had it bad in the States!  I didn't realize things had gotten so bad across the pond!  Hang in there, Icelandic friends!

Short version - there have been regular protests in front of the Icelandic parliament for the past three months or so over the economic situation and that nobody in power seems to be doing anything about it. Then last week/week before the protests got quite heated -scuffles with the police, tear gas, etc. Then the Icelandic Prime Minister a few days ago announced that he had cancer, would not run for re-election and called elections for May 9th. Then the two parties that were in coalition to run the government, split - basically dissolving the government, and the PM is out now rather than in May. Now the minority political parties are in talks about forming an interim government, and full elections will probably be called earlier than May 9th. In the meantime, the head of Iceland's Central Bank is still sitting pretty through all this and people are very mad and puzzled that he hasn't been removed yet.

Any Icelanders jump in here and correct anything/expand on this. If you ever want to keep track of stuff over there (although I first saw about the government unraveling in the NY Times online), two places:

Thanks, Pop. Well, Icelandic friends, I will be thinking of you. There are sure weird things going on around the world right now. It's times like this when music and friends like those here at this site seem just that much more important in our lives.
