Dear Magni

I am one of the tens, no hundreds, of thousands of people who now know your name, the sound of your voice, the name of your wife and son...I cannot imagine the enormous changes your life has gone through just the past six months. You were famous in Iceland and now you are famous in most of the world.

When I read your post about flying back to Canada with Dilana to do that concert in Ottawa, it hit me: Your life will never be the same. You cannot go back to being that stay-at-home daddy who plays music while mommy teaches school...

One of the things we all liked best about the Rockstar: Supernova webcasts and television shows was you: Magni, the gifted "jukebox" of a musician, the rock steady voice of reason in the house full of crazy musical artists, the grounded family man who missed his wife and baby. In Hollywood, in the celebrity culture especially in America, fidelity isn't something we see very often. It is refreshing and uplifting, inspiring even to see a man who loves his family so much.

Your career is taking off like a bullet! But the most important things will always be Eryun and Marino. No matter what else happens in the months and years to come, they come first.

Fame comes and goes. And Marino will only be a little boy for a short time. In the months to come people (your fans, music industry people, the press and so on) will demand more and more of your time and energy. But be strong. Hold to your boundaries, your privacy. Keep sacred the time you spend with your family. You owe us nothing at all compared with what you owe to them.

I say this to you as my children approach adulthood. Mine are 19. 18. 17. and 13 years old. That seems so old to you, I know.  But it happened in the blink of an eye. They grow up so quickly. It is easy to miss if you're not paying attention.

A while back I went to New York City for a year to sing opera. I left my kids with their daddy and step-mother to pursue my dreams of singing at the Metropolitan Opera. But one day walking around lower Manhattan on a crisp fall Sunday afternoon I realized I would never afford to have my kids live with me if I stayed there in NYC. I couldn't bear to miss their last years of growing up. So I went home. I let go of my dreams and have found a new venue through which to be an opera singer that doesn't compromise my kids.

Stay grounded, dearest Magni. We adore you. We will buy your albums and concert tickets and even airplane tickets to Iceland to come see you. But no matter how much we love you, Eryun and Marino and the rest of your family and real life friends love you more.

Your fan, Starbuck in Plano, Texas

P.S.

I was thinking about what I wrote last night as I drove to work this morning. I worried that I made it sound like I didn't think you'd make it, or that the fame and fortune would go to your head and ruin you, or that I thought you shouldn't take every advantage of what your skill and good fortune have brought before you.

Absolutely not!  Enjoy the ride, beautiful singer!!!

You are in good company with men like Bono and Sting and even Jon Bon Jovi who have maintained a balance between fame and family.

Good luck and God bless.

Starbuck

Starbuck, I must agree.

Magni, A huge part of my LOVE for you came after I heard what an AWESOME voice you had-that came first of course but... when I saw the video of you watching your son and saw you were a nice family man, I crumbled!!!!! And then as the weeks went by and I saw your quiet strength, level-headedness, family devotion, uncompromising values, maturity, etc...I seriously saw an incredible person behind the incredible voice. I too hope you never change and stay as down to earth as you are. Bono, Sting, and Jon Bon Jovi are excellent artists to emulate as great musicians and great men; it is possible!!!

(That lucky, lucky, lucky fiance of yours!!!!)

I was thinking about this too.  At fist I thought the original letter said he could not have both worlds.  But I see what you are saying now.  You can have both, you just need to keep your priorities straight.  I know Faith Hill, the country singer, does this by touring certain times of the year etc..  You can have a family and be a rocker.  Everyone loves you for who you are, a family man AND a rocker, never lose sight of that.  Keep your dreams, just adjust them to include your family.  It sounds and looks like you have a wonderful family to back you up.  I wish you all the best and happiness in your new found fame.

Thanks spec!  I'm glad I added the PS...I'm so happy for Magni's success. I wouldn't want him to miss this adventure. I wouldn't want it to ruin him either.

Some folks get sooo impressed with their own "importance" and start to believe their own press. He is something so rare. I'd be sad if Magni were to become merely common by buying in to all that holllywood celebrity culture garbage in which "stuff" means more than people and relationships.

(like your sig by the way. As an opera singer folks don't think I listen to rock and roll, Ha!)

OzChick and Hubby...

Good to hear from you.

it just staggers the imagination to think of how huge Magni's popularity has become in just a few short months. It must at least a hundred fold times more surreal for him and his family. I mean a celebrity in his own country of fewer folks than live in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area where am from to international fame faster than you can say "Are you ready for a new sensation?" Wow. From Oz to Iceland, there are literally folks from all over the world on this forum cheering Magni on!

I do with all my heart wish Magni, Toby, Dilana and Storm (yeah, even Lucas too) every success and happiness. They have worked hard for this "lucky break"...paying their dues along the way to become "overnight sensations".

Well said starbuck.  Stay true to who you are, not what others want you to be.  Real success isn't about money or fame...........
